Analyst

Matthew Latarewicz is an Investment Analyst supporting all of HBCM’s investment strategies through a combination of fundamental research and quantitative analysis. His work includes company-level due diligence, quantitative research, and portfolio monitoring. He also leads the ongoing development of Heron Bay’s proprietary data analytics infrastructure.

Prior to joining Heron Bay in 2024, Matt spent nearly a decade in Chicago, most recently as an Equity Analyst at RMB Capital Management. He began his career at FactSet Research Systems, where he held a series of client-facing roles over nearly eight years. During that time, he worked with institutional investors—including asset managers, hedge funds, insurance companies, and asset owners—to design, implement, and customize workflows that enabled data-driven decision-making and process automation across the entire investment lifecycle. His work included developing multi-factor stock-selection models, automating performance attribution reports, and creating enterprise risk management dashboards.

Matthew holds an MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management and a BS in Finance from Oakland University. He is a CFA Charterholder and a member of the CFA Society of Detroit. A Michigan native, Matthew returned home in 2024 and now lives in Bloomfield Hills with his wife, Allison. Outside of work, he enjoys golfing, skiing, wake surfing, and exploring local coffee shops.

How did you develop your investment philosophy/get interested in investing?

I was first introduced to investing by my dad, who shared Berkshire Hathaway annual reports with me at a young age – long before I could fully understand them. That early exposure sparked an interest in how businesses create lasting value. I began college on a pre-dental track, but after starting a small business during undergrad, I realized I was more drawn to understanding how companies operate and shifted my academic focus to business and finance. I’ve always enjoyed structured problem-solving—math and physics came naturally growing up—so investing quickly felt like a natural fit. Over time, my initial curiosity has evolved into a long-term investment philosophy grounded in deep fundamental research, business quality, and long-term orientation. The opportunity to apply and continue refining this philosophy at Heron Bay has been an enriching experience— one that continues to shape how I grow as an investor every day.

If I weren't an analyst, I would be...

If I weren't an investment analyst, I'd probably be a commercial airline pilot. I've always been drawn to the structure and rhythm of air travel—early-morning departures, the stillness above the clouds, and the opportunity to see new places. While I never pursued it professionally, I could see myself working toward a private pilot's license as a personal goal one day.
